Deliberate Perception is the attuning of awareness, sense by sense, so that we perceive more fully and more consciously than habit allows. The quality of any sense changes the moment we bring consciousness to it: to listen to a taste, to attend closely to a touch, is already to deepen itand to discover, within what we thought we already knew, an unsuspected fineness of grain. It is the first discipline because every other capacity rests on the quality of what we take in; a coarse perception cannot ground a subtle life. It is practiced through the four windows, and threaded, across the curriculum, through each of the senses in turn, until perceiving deliberately is no longer an effort but simply a way of being awake.
