What Is Taught Is States
2 minutes read.
What is taught at a retreat is not, finally, information; it is states. A retreat exists to let practitioners experience directly — not be told about, but actually inhabit — the turned-on relationship with life the work calls Wholesome Eroticism, the constancy of Loving Presence, the steadiness of Coherent Resonance held in a room full of others doing the same. These are the internal technologies, and they are learned the way any technology is learned: by doing, in conditions arranged so that doing succeeds. The retreat is the workshop of the internal; community and a few days apart are the only equipment it requires.
And retreats do something the solitary year cannot: they make the cohort into a body. Those who began as fellow students return as something nearer to kin, having witnessed and been witnessed, having presenced genius in one another across days of shared practice. The bonds formed there are the raw material of community — the first knitting-together of the people who will, in time, hold the work for one another long after any single retreat has ended.
Within the Coherence Thesis. the retreats are coherence made flesh — the days in which what has been understood is at last embodied, and a cohort of separate practitioners becomes a single coherent body. What the retreat gathers into days, the community must then learn to hold across years.
