A Passage, Not a Program

A retreat is structured as a passage, not a program. It begins, as the work always begins, in Listening — in silence, and in the deliberate attuning of each sense, so that the noise carried in from ordinary life can settle and the faculties can come awake. From that quiet the days move through the initiates in turn, each practice chosen to bring the body further into presence: the deliberate perception of taste at a shared meal taken slowly; the witnessing of one another in council, where each is beheld rather than judged; the channeling of life-force in movement and breath; the making of art that asks nothing of skill and everything of attention. The arc of a retreat is the arc of the whole work in miniature — from listening, through intimacy and balance and art and embodiment, toward worship and the providence of returning home changed.
