On Releasing the Book Now

A book that names its own current state this directly is being released for specific reasons.

The conditions the book describes are not waiting. The chapters on AI capability, climate destabilization, and institutional breakdown describe a present that is moving faster than the time it would take to produce a more comprehensive version. The cost of waiting is that the book arrives into a world that has already been further shaped by the dynamics it tries to address.

The book functions as the first articulation of a body of work that other people are needed to develop. Some of those people cannot find each other without something like this book existing. Releasing it now is part of how the field Chapter Eleven described might begin to find itself. A more developed version released later would be a better book in some respects, but it would also be a book released into a field that has continued to fragment for additional years.

The book is part of how the project itself develops. The technical work on Providence, the deeper engagement with the intellectual traditions named above, the empirical strengthening of specific claims, the operational design of governance and trust architecture—all of these will benefit from collaborators who arrive at the work through having read what currently exists. Releasing the book now is part of how those collaborators become possible.
