The Body as Primary Text

209 words, about 1 minute.

The body is not an instrument of the mind. It is the mind's first home, its most truthful record, and its most reliable guide — if we have developed the instruments to read it.

— Bessel van der Kolk, The Body Keeps the Score

We come now to the engine. Everything in the preceding chapters — the Currency of Presence, the matching membrane, the coordination of wisdom — depends on a single capability: the ability to detect, reliably and non-invasively, when genuine presence is occurring and when genuine presencing is taking place between people. Without that capability, Providence is only another well-intentioned community. With it, Providence is something that has never existed: a coordination device that can recognize, record, and circulate the quality of human encounter itself.

This chapter and the next explain how that capability works. We ask the reader to attend closely here, because it is in the mechanism that the innovation becomes real. It would be easy to read the language of presence and coherence as inspiring abstraction. It is not abstraction. It is a measurable, physiological, increasingly well-understood set of processes, and the instruments to read them now exist or are arriving. We will not hide the science behind poetry. We will show the machine working.
