We can now state the deepest version of the argument, the one that resolves the original objection not by defeating money but by understanding its proper place. Money and the Currency of Presence are good at opposite things, and a civilization that intends to feed itself sustainably needs both.
Money is a superb instrument for coordinating the production and distribution of things that can be standardized, priced, transported, and exchanged among strangers. It is one of the great coordination technologies in human history, and nothing in this book should be read as a call to abolish it. The objection that Providence is anti-market misunderstands the argument entirely. Money does what it does extraordinarily well.
But there is an entire domain of economic life — and it is precisely the domain on which provisioning ultimately rests — that money coordinates badly or destroys outright. The health of a soil. The integrity of a watershed. The diversity of a seed stock. The web of relationships that constitutes a food culture. The long-horizon stewardship of a particular place by a particular community. The care that cannot be priced without being deformed. These things are local, relational, slow, and alive — and money, which excels at the standardized, the transactional, the fast, and the dead, is structurally blind to them. When money is the only currency, these things are not merely undervalued; they are systematically converted into the priceable forms that destroy them. The living soil becomes a substrate for chemical extraction. The watershed becomes a resource to be drawn down. The food culture becomes a market to be captured. This is not a failure of individual greed. It is what happens when the only instrument a civilization has for recognizing value cannot perceive the forms of value on which its own survival depends.
The Currency of Presence is the missing instrument. It is the coordination layer for the part of material life that money cannot see — the regenerative, the local, the relational, the living. It does not replace the money economy. It coordinates the economy beneath the money economy: the economy of soil and water and seed and relationship and care, the economy that produces the actual conditions of being fed and housed and held, the economy that the commodity system depletes precisely because it cannot perceive it. A civilization with both currencies could do what no civilization running on money alone has managed: it could coordinate the production of goods at scale and the stewardship of living systems at depth, simultaneously, each currency doing the work it is suited to.
We are not building an alternative to the economy. We are building the coordination layer for the half of the economy that money was never able to see — the living half, the half that feeds us when the commodity system fails.
