Why This Engine Is Both Possible and Unbuilt

We have already explained, in the chapter on openness, why the great technology companies have not built this despite plainly seeing its value: built the ordinary way, closed and cloud-bound, it would be a surveillance instrument of such intimacy that no trustworthy company could deploy it and no clear-eyed person should accept it. The privacy implications, on the standard architecture, are disqualifying. This is why the most valuable personal technology imaginable sits unbuilt in plain sight, while the companies with the resources to build it pour those resources into lesser things.

And we have explained why this is precisely the opening. The thing that makes the system unbuildable for a closed, cloud-bound corporation — the radioactive intimacy of the fused signal — is exactly the thing that an open, sovereign, edge-run architecture renders safe. The same depth that is a prison in the cloud is a gift on hardware you control and in code you can audit. The companion that no one can safely build the ordinary way can be built, trustworthily, the open way. This is not a marginal advantage. It is the entire reason a values-aligned project could create what the largest companies on Earth cannot.

Here, then, is the flywheel. The personal coherence companion, built open and sovereign, is an instrument of such immediate and obvious value that it can sustain itself and generate genuine resources — not by extracting from its users or harvesting their signal, which would betray everything, but simply by being worth, to each person who uses it, far more than it costs. And those resources are precisely what is needed to fund the slower, harder, less immediately remunerative work: the group coherence research, the development of the gathering instruments, the long patient labor toward the frontier of a genuine Currency of Presence. The companion is the engine. The deeper coordination work is what the engine is for.
