Why It Must Not Be a Startup, and Why It Must Not Be Only a Church

A Currency of Presence cannot be minted by an institution whose organizing logic is extraction. This is not a moral preference. It is a structural law, and it determines the entire institutional design that Part Four will describe.
The reason is simple and absolute: the thing this currency measures is destroyed by extraction. Genuine presence cannot be performed for an extractive system without ceasing to be genuine. The moment participants sense that their depth is being monetized — that their most intimate encounters are being harvested for someone else's gain — the depth disappears, and with it the very thing the currency was meant to recognize. A startup optimizes for extraction: find value, capture it, return it to shareholders. Applied to a Currency of Presence, that logic is self-annihilating. It would destroy the substrate it depends on.
And yet a Currency of Presence cannot be minted by a pure community or church either — not because community is wrong, but because community alone has repeatedly proven unable to sustain itself. The history of intentional communities and spiritual networks is a history of beautiful containers that dissolved when the founder burned out, when the money ran out, when the absence of rigorous structure allowed drift and capture and decay. The right container must hold the depth of a sacred institution and the durability, the operational capacity, the economic realism of a well-built enterprise.
Providence is therefore neither a company nor a church, but a deliberate fusion of both — stewarded by the nonprofit Purposeful Foundation, which holds the commons and protects the depth, and operated through a public-benefit enterprise that sustains it economically. The full architecture of this fusion, and the governance that holds the two in productive tension, is the subject of Part Four. But the reader should understand, before we reach the governance: the unusual structure is not institutional decoration. It is the only container in which a Currency of Presence can exist without destroying itself.
