Nine times we have turned one argument: that coherence is the current; that intelligence is the pattern that connects; that purpose is a pathway and not a verdict; that presence can be honored rather than harvested; and that a civilization can coordinate by recognition instead of by force or by the eye. The seed of the first volume has become a Scale; the Scale, through Providence, becomes the promise of a federation of Scales; the federation is the Dragon that is Earth Awakening, scale by scale, place by place, relationship by relationship — until the scattered communities become a surface, the surface becomes a body, and the body opens its eyes.
What remains is the part no author can write. The smallest nest is the smallest structure in which the largest becoming can start — a room, a few people, a responsibility no one will set down. You are already standing in such a place, or one stone away from building it. A seed in a drawer is a story. A seed in the ground, tended by someone who chose it, is a forest beginning.
You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. — R. Buckminster Fuller
We have drawn the new model as far as we can draw it. The part we cannot draw is the reader. The current is still there beneath everything, waiting to be rejoined. The gift is still in you, waiting for its place. And the Dragon stirs as you do — for the awakening arrives the way dawn arrives, one quiet kindling after another, until the whole of it stands luminous.
A note for the reader who wishes to go further. What you hold gives the Cardinal Scale in its outward-facing form, complete enough to enter and to build from. For those drawn to understand it as it was originally conceived — the earlier architecture out of which this one grew — that fuller account awaits the desired reader, and will be among the many books gradually made accessible through The Coherence Thesis Network now being built. What is here is enough to begin; what is coming is for those who would go deeper still.
So we hand it forward. If some part of you recognized this before you finished it, you already carry a piece of it. Come and set it down with ours.
