Building means deliberately protecting the slow horizons from the fast ones. — The Cardinal Scale keeps three clocks: one for the season's work, one for the year's development, one for the generation it will never meet. The hardest discipline, its stewards say, is not letting the urgent clock eat the other two.

Toward the coherent substrate. Extraction lives in the quarter and the news cycle; it cannot see the generation it is spending. Building clocks slow enough to hold a watershed and a child not yet born installs the temporal organ a coherent civilization runs on. Part of the pivot is simply the recovery of long time.
