When the Money Arrives

The test of an institution's independence is not what it refuses when refusal is easy. It is what it refuses when acceptance would solve every problem it currently has.

The message that arrives on Tuesday afternoon, the one that would become the largest decision the community had faced, offers money. This chapter walks through what happens when it is taken up, not because the offer of money is the most dramatic situation a community can face, but because it is the one in which the gap between the architecture's stated commitments and its actual behavior is most exposed. Money does not test what a community says it values. It tests what a community will give up to remain what it claims to be. The scene remains design fiction.
