Sequence, and Metered Depth

Two principles govern how the curriculum is delivered, and both are matters of care more than of content. The first is sequence: the order is not negotiable, because each capacity rests on the ones before it, and to reach for the horizon before the ground is laid is to grasp at what cannot be held. One does not attempt animistic awareness before one has learned to perceive deliberately. The second is metered depth: the curriculum is mentor-guided precisely so that depth is met only when one is ready to meet it. A teaching offered too early is not a kindness but a harm; a teaching withheld until its hour becomes a revelation. The mentor’s art is to read readiness, and to open each door at the moment the student can walk through it.

This volume is the curriculum’s threshold and its map. It names the architecture and sets it in view; it does not, and is not meant to, replace the walking. The walking is done in the yearweek by week, initiation by initiation, in the company of a mentor and a cohortand it is gathered, several times across that year, into days set wholly apart for it. Those days are the retreats.

Within the Coherence Thesis. the curriculum is coherence given timethe patient sequencing by which a person is grown coherent across a year rather than persuaded coherent in an afternoon. Coherence cannot be installed at speed; it ripens, and the year is how we give it room to ripen.
