What makes presence a coordinating technology, and not merely a private comfort, is that it holds us accountableto our word, and to our presence. A person who is genuinely present cannot easily say what they do not mean, because in presence the saying and the meaning are one act; and a community trained in presence can feel, immediately, the difference between a word that is inhabited and a word that is hollow. Coordination at scale has always foundered on the gap between what people say and what they do. Presence closes that gap from the inside. It is a kind of accountability that needs no enforcement, because it is cultivated rather than imposed: we become answerable to one another not because we are watched, but because we are presentand presence cannot pretend for long.
