Presence is the first of these internal technologies, and the ground of all the others. To be present is not a vague softness of mood; it is a trainable facultythe capacity to bring the whole of one’s awareness to bear on what is actually here, rather than on the remembered or the anticipated. Nothing can be perceived deliberately, related to lovingly, or created consciously by an attention that is elsewhere. And presence is the precise opposite of extraction at the level of attention: to be present is to give attention rather than to take it, and giving attention is the one gift that enriches the giver in the giving.
