And the fifth volume came down to the ground. After four ascentsthrough substrate and intelligence and architecture and engineeringit returned to the single human life on which every abstraction is finally tested, and there it found the thing the whole work had been circling all along.

Human potential is the most wasted resource on Earth. Not as a figure of speech, but in plain accounting: the inventors who never invented, the healers who never healed, the gifts that died unspent for want of anywhere to be given. The fifth volume traced how that waste might end. It showed that purpose cannot be assigned but can be discovered, and named the pathway by which the discovering happens. It recovered the lost art of recognitionthe seamstress’s gift, the bare ability to see what a person is forand called it the gift our civilization squanders most completely of all.

It showed that no one becomes themselves alone; that we ripen only in the company of those who recognize us; and that such company has a natural sizeroughly a hundred and fifty, the most a person can truly holdthe scale at which we can still be known, and missed, and held to our word. It gave the coordinating device its name, Providence, and its single inversion: that systems exist to serve life. It named the sovereign communitiesIndividual Communities Observing Natural Sovereigntyand the planetary whole they slowly compose, the dragon named Earth, beginning to wake through us.

Almost everything in this little book is drawn, above all, from that fifth volumebecause the fifth volume is where the great architecture finally narrows to a single person, standing in a small room, deciding whether or not to build.
