The Larger Argument

The deepest claim of this chapter, separate from any specific project, is that the people who would build coherent civilization are already here. They are scattered across many traditions, working in many forms, mostly invisible to each other, mostly invisible to mainstream institutional discourse, mostly operating in conditions of severe undercapitalization relative to the urgency. The question is not whether the builders exist. The question is whether they will find each other before fragmentation becomes irreversible.

This is the question on which the next phase depends. If the regenerative-coordination world and the inner-development world remain in their respective silos, the work of each will continue to be limited by what the other already knows. If the contemplative technologists, the bioregional coordinators, and the coordination-infrastructure builders remain unable to find each other, the integration the present moment requires will not occur. If the AI alignment research community continues to operate in isolation from the relational, governance, and economic infrastructure work that determines whether alignment can actually be achieved at the civilizational level, the technical work will fail to translate into the civilizational outcomes its participants are hoping for.

The work is real. The builders are real. What is missing is the connective tissue.

The next chapter turns to the question of what humanity is actually moving through right now—the developmental and psychological dimensions of the threshold the book has been describing, the grief and disorientation and possibility of the present moment, and what it asks of the people living through it. Because the question of who builds and how is finally inseparable from the question of what it feels like to be alive in a civilization crossing into conditions it has never crossed before.
